Meet The Staff


Marcie Humphrey , RN, MSN
Orthopaedic Nurse Clinician and Research Coordinator

Marcie has been a nurse since 1985. She came to Children's Hospital & Research Center at Oakland in early 1986 and has worked here since, with pediatric patients on the Acute Care Units. She eventually earned her BSN and then her MSN while working at CHRCO.  Marcie was the Surgical Unit Manager for over 5 years, and was a member of numerous committees for the hospital. She later accepted a tenure faculty position at a local nursing program providing clinical and classroom instruction, while also working at CHRCO as a Nursing Supervisor. Since then, she has moved into pediatric research with various studies, including Enzyme Replacement Therapy (ERT) for patients with Mucopolysaccharidoses; Orthopaedics research and Meningococcal vaccine studies.  Marcie is an educator for Shire Pharmaceuticals, providing inservice training for nurses providing ERT in the MPS II population. She is also a Clinical Instructor for the Samuel Merritt Accelerated BSN (ABSN) Program.

Marcie is now part of the Orthopaedic team, providing Case Management and phone advice to orthopaedic patients in the out-patient and in-patient settings. She provides Case Management services for Dr. Policy, while also coordinating and implementing Orthopaedic research for Dr. Hoffinger. She provides education to patients, families and staff regarding orthopaedic care in and out of the hospital. She is currently updating several informational packets for orthopaedic surgery, and concentrating on surgical planning, education and coordination for her patient population.

Michael Syberg, RN
Orthpaedic Nurse Clinician

Michael began working at Children's Hospital in November 1978 while still a Nursing Student. After obtaining his Nursing License he began work as a Staff Nurse on the Adolescent and Orthpaedic Unit and continued in this postion until 1981. In February of that year he was hired as the Orthpaedic Nurse Clinician and has remained in this position throughout his tenure at Children's Hospital. Until 1993, when Dr. Hoffinger became Chief of Orthpaedics, Michael was the sole employee of the department. In additon to his primary nursing functions he was also the hospital Orthpaedic Technician for both inpatient and outpatient services, orientated new patient care employees to Orthpaedics and provided continuing education for the Nursing Staff and Emergency Room Pediatric Residents. In 1994 he assumed all Orthpaedic Case Management responsibilities and continued in that role until 2000 when he gratefully began to share those responsibilities. At the present time he provides Case Management services to Dr. Hoffinger. His primary responsibilties include pre-operative and post-operative surgical planning, patient and family education, coordination of inpatient care and as liaison with schools, primary care physicians and outside vendors.
